Size Guide and Patterns

Use the following size guides when knitting or crocheting for preemies through adults.  

Hats

Preemies & Babies

Preemies:

5 1/2 - 6 lbs 
Head Circumference 12 1/2" - 13" hat circ = 11" - 12" Hat height =  5 to 5.5"

Newborn 
Head Circumference 13" - 14 "  hat circ = 11.5" - 13" Hat height = 5.5 to 6"

Baby - 3 to 6 months  
Head Circumference: 14" - 17 "  Hat height= 6.5 - 7"

Baby 6 to 12 months
Head Circumference: 16" - 19 "   Hat height = 7.5"

Toddler - preschooler (12 months - 3 years)  Hat height = 8"
Head Circumference: 18" to 20 "

Children's

Child (3 - 10 years)  Hat height =8.5"
Head Circumference: 19" - 20 1/2" 

Teen & Young Adult

Pre-teens and Teens  Hat height 9-10"
Head Circumference: 20 1/2" - 22"

Women's

Head Circumference:  21.5" - 22.5"  Hat height = 11" 

Men's

Head Circumference:  23" - 24"  Hat height = 11"-11.5"

Standard length is from 36" to 48" depending on the age of the child you are knitting for

Standard length is from 48" to 60"

Foot Length 3 1/4" - 3 3/4"   (most needed size for newborns)

Use these standard baby measurements for making clothes, hats and socks:

6-8 LBS
Neck to Feet: 14 1/2"
Wrist to Wrist: 14 1/4"
Circumference around bottom of neck: 4 1/2"
Chest: 11 1/2" 
Head: 13 1/2"
Feet: 3" - 3 1/2"  

9-11 LBS
Neck to Feet: 17"
Wrist to Wrist: 16"
Circumference around bottom of neck: 5 1/2"
Chest: 14 1/2" 
Head: 14 1/2"
Feet: 3 1/4" - 3 3/4"

Use sizing provided in pattern instructions

Blankets & Afghans

Preemies & Babies

For preemies, blankets without 'holes' are best.
Preemie: 20" - 22" square
Large Preemie: 22" - 28" square
Full Term Baby: 28" - 36" square

Baby  30" x 36" = crib sized (6" granny squares= 5 across x 6 down ~ 30 sq)

Children's

Children  42"x 48"  (6" squares= 7 across x 8 down ~ 56 sq)

Adults

Lapghan often used in seniors homes 36" x 48" (6" squares= 6 across x 8 down ~ 48 squares)
Adult Afghan (Will fit across top of bed)  48" x 72" = twin sized.  (6" squares= 8 across x 12 down ~ 96 squares)
Adult Double Bed  (Will fit across top of bed)  60" x 84" = full sized.  (6" squares= 10 across x 14 down ~ 140 squares)
